Dating Torture

Uncategorized

Don’t you just love celebrity reality shows? OK maybe not but if you’ve got nothing better to do why not?

I’m not suggesting you torture yourself and Tivo the hit show I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here!, but I believe it bares some consideration when it comes to dating.

Take for instance, the young lovers Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag from the hit pseudo-reality MTV show, The Hills. For better or for worse, these newlyweds are being beamed into our living rooms without our permission or approval. As celebrities, they apparently have a right to invade our personal TV space whenever they feel like it!

I say instead of feeling like all hope in humanity is lost why not use this awful show to better your dating life?

The Young Turks very astutely point out that the whole point of the show is to see celebrities crack under the slightest pressure so why not enjoy it? It’s the whole point of the show after all. The idea being that once you see self important celebrities crack under the pressure, you’ll feel better about yourself.

Since the beginning of the show Spencer and Heidi have been threatening to walk off the show because they don’t like the conditions. Of course, this again would be the whole point of the show right? Put fake celebrities in somewhat tough surroundings and nine times out of ten they would usually cry like babies.

Forgive me for asking this, but if these two can’t last 24 hours together under these “tough” conditions how long will their marriage last?

Some psychologists I’ve interviewed say that men and women should do non dating like events together like volunteering at homeless shelters or other charities where both people can be put under stress together and see another side of themselves. If they don’t like what they see, they can then end the relationship or ask the other person to change.

I agree with this in that normal dating conditions will never simulate normal marital conditions. Getting out into the world and seeing the world through different eyes is just what any budding relationship needs to see if it will stand the test of time.
